The Biggest Mistakes People Make with Social Media

Monday, October 3rd, 2011

Social media is a great way to grow your business, but it’s not a magic marketing bullet. Many businesses are saying “yes, let’s grow our business by getting on social media, but then honestly don’t have a clue or believe being on their alone will make something magical happen. Here are some common mistakes I have seen, and hopefully, you can avoid them:

Mistake #1: Leading with Marketing Messages
This tactic doesn’t work on social media. Social media is about being social, so start relating through two-way conversations and don’t talk about yourself so much. Take off your marketing hat and just be human.

Mistake #2: Not Having a Plan
Many businesses just throw information out there expecting it to stick and be remembered. Have you asked yourself how you can leverage social media to grow your business? What makes you different? How can you let your personality shine through?

Mistake #3: Not Being Consistent
Don’t start something you don’t intend to finish or do well at. Be consistent, present and responsive or don’t do it at all.

Mistake # 4 – No Patience
If you aren’t ready to invest in the time it takes to build relationships, then social media isn’t for you.

Remember, you are dealing with people, and people do business with those they know, like and trust. Zig Ziglar has said “people don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.”
