It’s Just Broken Glass

As I was heading down Dan Jones in Avon on an afternoon a few weeks ago, just chatting with a friend on the phone while heading to my next appointment, something happened. Some sort of boulder, yes, it sounded like a boulder, hit my windshield and left this unbelievable, but beautiful crack. The sound was so loud that it hurt my ears, and I could feel the pressure in my ears for some time afterwards.

Many thoughts went through my head – but overall, I was laughing because I just could not believe how loud it was and what a huge crack it was. There was a part of me that was so relieved that it happened on the passenger side because had it been three feet to the left, I wouldn’t have been able to see, and I have no idea what my reaction would have been. I thank my lucky stars it was just broken glass.

And that’s when it occurred to me (again) that events are neutral, and it is our reaction to it that puts an emotion to it. Yes, it’s a bummer that it will cost me over $200 to get it fixed, but honestly, that is nothing in the scheme of things. I’m glad it was my windshield that took the brunt of it – not me personally or someone walking down the road or someone else’s windshield who really couldn’t afford to get it replaced.

Too many times, we make a big deal out of things that really don’t deserve that much attention and emotion. In the end, it’s just some broken glass. Just pick it up and move on.

Connecting the Team’s Dots

We’ve all heard the tried and true expression of “there is no ‘I’ in team.” When there are team members in an organization who do not appreciate or understand the contribution, importance and value of their work and their colleagues work, there can be disconnect with the team. When there is disconnect with a team, the entire effectiveness of the business suffers.

There is more to being a good team member than wearing a corporate logo, stamping it on a t-shirt, or putting up posters about success and teamwork. When a team works well together there is a shared understanding of and commitment to, the goals of the organization. So, how do you get the team members to work together and connect their team dots in a meaningful, productive way?

Keep communicating!

One way to encourage a shared team focus at all levels of an organization is by making sure that the goals and the vision of the company are clear and reiterated frequently. Assuming that your team knows is a big mistake.

Two: make sure that each individual knows HOW what they do fits into the goals of the organization. When polled, most employees can’t answer how what they do impacts the vision of the company. If employees don’t know their impact or how they are being measured it’s difficult to hold them accountable to results.

Three: invest in training and development. A sports team is really only as good as each individual. That’s why training and development is crucial. When organizations use effective training and development techniques, then connecting the dots in a more productive, effective way is easy.

Business owners and managers need to make sure that their team members understand the goals of the company; are clear about how they personally contribute and impact the results; and invest in training and development of their people. These three simple steps will make employees feel more respected and valued for their contributions.

How to Unleash the Power of Innovation in Your Life and Business

I’m often asked, “How do we come up with new ideas to grow our organization?” This is an interesting question and a simple one line answer cannot do it justice. There’s really no simple answer, but let me use this time together to share why I believe innovation combined with implementation is the best course of action.

Having gone back through my third book recently, I was struck once again by chapter six titled, Innovation Trumps Mediocrity and how it addresses the power of ideas and harnessing them to your advantage.

Here’s a partial excerpt from the chapter with a helpful list of twelve strategies to help inspire and motivate you to ignite the power of innovation in your own life, business, or career!

The World Needs You to Step Up
and Take Action

No one can save you but yourself. You must reengage your talents, ideas, habits, knowledge base, associations and dreams to turn things around in your own life. The bailout mentality is a short term illusion that does not solve long-term problems.

If we’re to turn the economy around it will require you to move past the status quo thinking of “security” to a new paradigm of trusting in your own God-given abilities and working on them relentlessly. My friend Patrick Snow describes this process as “creating your own destiny” and he’s spot on with his assessment.

Great ideas and solutions are always present. The challenge for most of us is to capture them when they strike and act on them. There’s no shortage of ideas. The world has millions of great ideas floating around looking for the right person to seize and mold them into physical form. The real challenge is a shortage of belief in the ideas, and an even greater shortage of those who act on them.

12 great ways to “Capture” the power of innovation and take more positive action within your life:

1. Study and read in multiple disciplines
2. Always maintain curiosity as to why things are the way they are
3, Listen for problems in your market or industry and create or find ways to solve them
4. Learn how great organizations get ahead and model their success within your business
5. Always capture and record great ideas immediately when they strike by having a pen and paper ready
6. Bounce new ideas off of key associates, customers, and those you network with online and offline
7. Circulate by attending new events
8. Hang around successful people and soak in their wisdom and ideas

Don’t Give Up

Often life doesn’t go in the direction we want it to. Does that mean our lives are doomed and we can’t achieve the success we dream of? Let’s be realistic: Everybody fails. Consider the following.

Walt Disney was fired by a newspaper editor because “he lacked the imagination and had no good ideas.” Disney went bankrupt several times before he built Disneyland. In fact, the proposed park was rejected by the city of Anaheim, California, on the grounds that it would only attract “riffraff.”

Thomas Edison’s teachers said he was “too stupid to learn anything.” He was fired from his first two jobs for being “nonproductive.” As an inventor, Edison made more than 1,000 unsuccessful attempts to invent the light bulb. When a reporter asked him how it felt to fail 1,000 times, Edison said that he didn’t fail all those times, but that the light bulb was an invention with 1,000 steps.

Albert Einstein did not speak until he was four years old and did not read until he was seven. His parents thought he was “subnormal,” and one of his teachers described him as “mentally slow, unsociable and adrift forever in foolish dreams.” He was expelled from school.

Every cartoon that Charles Schulz creator of the comic strip Peanuts, submitted to the yearbook staff at his high school was rejected.

After Fred Astaire’s first screen test, the memo from the testing director of MGM, dated 1933, read, “Can’t act. Can’t sing. Slightly bald. Can dance a little.” Astaire kept that memo over the fireplace in his Beverly Hills home.

Decca Records turned down a recording contract with The Beatles with this fascinating evaluation: “We don’t like their sound. Guitar groups are on their way out.”

Imagine if these individuals had given up, believing they were doomed to failure and would never achieve success. Do you think they ever felt down and depressed? Sure. But they didn’t allow a gloomy state to overtake them, to overpower their desire to succeed. In every case they did succeed – in a huge way, far greater than their wildest dreams.

Bad experiences can be viewed as positive in hindsight and you can make them stepping stones rather than stumbling blocks.
