What Are You Missing?

Monday, August 6th, 2012

I woke up the morning of my 16th birthday excited to take my drivers test, and roll around Kalamazoo to hang out with friends.

My mom and I drove to the BMV together at 9am, and the test began. I parallel parked with precision. I stopped on the line within inches, and I passed the written test with a 98%. Boom! Here we go.

Next was the road test. With my mom in the back seat, and the state testing agent on the passenger side, I cruised through changing lanes, getting on the high way, and checking my blind spots. Then came the neighborhood school zone test.

I crept through the Winchell community at 26 miles an hour – careful not to break any laws. Quietly, my adjudicator took me off course and told me to turn left, then left, then left again. We then stopped the car at an intersection that we passed earlier and he said, “can you tell me what you see here?”

I said, “Uh, an intersection…”

My mom sighed from the back seat.

The testing agent said, “Did you see that stop sign the first time we came through here?”

Jamar failed his drivers test.

How many times have we gone through life and only saw what we wanted to see?

How many times has a customer communicated exactly what they wanted, and you completely missed the signs to close them?

What can you do to pay more attention, grab more details, and be conscious about how you are leading and selling?
