As I reflect back on 2012, I recognize that much of my success has come from spending time with people who inspire and make me better. They each contribute in little ways that help me to overcome challenges, see new opportunities and enjoy the things that make life amazing. I aspire to bring this same kind of inspiration to the people in my life. I will highlight someone new every few weeks and hope this personal reflection inspires you to see the remarkable people in your life. Any list of influential people in my life begins with the most positive person I know – my mom.
She sees the world through a different lens than most people by gratefully approaching each day excited to see what blessings it will bring. This perspective turns every phone conversation, visit from grandchildren, or dialogue with a cashier into an opportunity to make someone’s day. In a “me first” society, it’s refreshing to spend time with someone who always puts the needs of others first.
What’s most amazing about my mom is that it seems as if she’s hard wired to be positive in virtually every situation. As a speaker, coach and trainer, I am in the “positive” business. I get paid to light up a room and find the silver lining in every situation.
However, often times I don’t feel like being optimistic and I can easily become a big complainer after a long week. In these situations, I forget to count my blessings and find something wrong with every situation.
My mom is different.
Like most people, she has had her share of hardships in life. Yet, she always finds a way to put her challenges on the back burner when someone else is around. She has a knack for making you feel like the most important person in the room. If I could only teach my kids one life lesson it would be this. Look at life like your “Nena”. Don’t expect every day to be perfect, but rather see the blessings in every day.
Who inspires you?
